Does anyone know for sure if I do not take any classes in summer my student status will be invalid? I came to US in spring (Jan010) and have completed only one semester. And my International Student Advisor (who is also from Nepal) says that if I don't attend summer, I will fall out of status. Any suggestion and sharing will highly be appreciated.

No, you will be fine even if you do not take summer classes. International students have to take minimum 12 credit hours per semester in order to be in status. if you have taken 12 hours in spring, all you have to do is take 12 hours minimum in fall.

Nope. i think the advisor is probably talking about scholarship. if you have a scholarship, for you to maintain it you have to take at least 3 credits for the following summer (or that's how it used to be in my university)
P.s. your status is valid till your I20..so u need not to worry about it.

The only condition when you have to take full time classes in summer, i.e at least 12 credit hours, is that if it is your first semester in the US college or university.

This spring was my first semester, and I took 9 credits in the spring. So, I have not completed for12 credits till date. I am a graduate student. The Advisor is talking about status, not about any scholarships. He says that I need to take at least one class (3) credit in summer to maintain status. Thanks, Everyone!!

Why did you take only 9 credits when 12 credits are required to be in status? Did you drop one class or you just registered for 9 credits?
Now, yes you do have to take a class in summer to be in status. If not, you will be out-of-status and have to apply for re-instatement with a penalty of roughly 400 USD within six months of your SEVIS termination. Of 9 credits during spring, were any online class? If not, you could take an online class for 3 credits during the summer, but you have to talk to your advisor.
Good luck !

I did my graduate studies without taking any classes in summer.I think summer classes is optional. Please double confirm with with international advisor if its your university specific. Is your private or public university?

@ furke bro ,I think 9 credits is enough to be in status for Grad students, 12 credits is required for Undergrad. No, I didn't have any online courses in spring. I didn't drop any classes in spring either. I registered for only 9 credits, and also my Advisor never talked that 9 credits is not enough maintaining status.

I thought u were an undergrad, Why don't you go to USCIS website and show him what the law says or call them and ask and record the conversation; and playback in his office?

if you are on assistantship/fellowship then you need to register at least 1 (or 3) credit hour for payroll....otherwise you don't need to register any classes

I had Graduate Assistantship(GA) in spring, and in this university you must be enrolled for at least 9 credits to qualify for GA. and if I will take only 3 credits in summer , I won't get a GA in summer.
