Everyone I meet from Kathmandu these days is a millionaire it seems. In fact most of those people would probably register in the upper strata of American society as well. I had read a few weeks back that 60% of bank deposits (800 billion rupees) and 40 percent of the country's GDP is attributed to Kathmandu.

Not the same with people that come from outside the valley. Most of them still seem very barebones and struggling to make it.

Has the gap between KTM and the rest soared in the past decade? Isn't that a big slap on the face of all the communists? Or are they just promoting crony capitalism which has brought wealth to a few and misery to the rest?

It is not actually a slap to the communists. Its a gift to them. More poverty there is more flourished communists are.

More poor people in US helps Democrats and more poors in Nepal help communists.

Until and unless the society and the economy figures out the way to distribute equal oppurtunity for everyone the ones with more will always grab more oppurtunity for themselves and the ones with  the least will always have no oppurtunity for them. There is just no way to reduce socialists/communists without reducing the poverting.

It is truly amazing how much money the people in Kathmandu have. Everytime I go to visit ktm, I feel inferiority complex seeing friends driving 50Lakh SUV. Living in mansions with multiple household help, on land and house that costs 4 - 5 krores.

In the US I feel like I'm doing okay, making almost 100K per year. But when I go to KTM, it's a different story.

Most people who have become rich are the ones who inherited housed and land, with high prices even selling a house can net you crores in KTM. I personally have relatives who havent done anything their entire lives, but are rich as hell.

The original residents of KTM all had land there so when they sold it, they all became rich. Pretty simple eh? Land is more expensive than some places in New York!

No matter how rich they are, the life in KTM is f%#ked up. It's so over crowded.

Lopchandai that's the reason why we choose to remain the US. Right now KTM is good to visit for a short time and even during that time you realize it's difficult to survive the sickness caused by the dust, the pollution, the traffic jam, lack of water and electricity. It's possible to live outside the ring road area for better environment but you can't escape the bad attributes of the city.
