I got a call from ATT saying I need to subscribe for data plan if I am using smart phones, in my case i-phone. This is the 3G that was on ATT plan and I gave it to my wife to use it. She does not need data plan at all as most of the places she goes to have wifi connection. The ATT guy was so precise about the date she started using iphone. I had the charge revered for this time but he said, if she continues to use the iphone, she will be charged then data plan because they can find out which phone she's using. Does other people have the same issues in Sajha? is there a workaround so that ATT does not know what kind of phone you're using? I personally think this is a rip off as I don't need and want data on my phone but I am being forced. This should not be legal but what can I say, they are big and they have money to buy law.

Cool down Llcoola, before you take on AT&T. Almost all carriers I know require data plan to be purchased when buying a smart phone. Their justification is that purchasing a higher plan allows them to subsidize the cost of the smart phones. If you were to buy Iphone w/o those contracts it could cost you 500 bucks. That's why it is perfectly legal and not without justification. Now, if you want to circumvent the mandatory data plan, you might be able to get a smart phone from outside, unlock it and use it in AT&T account, as long as the phone doesn't have AT&T IMEI code (which helps them identify the phone). There might be other ways to do it too. You will end up paying more for the phone this way but will avoid monthly data charges.

NO,all carries does not force data plan. I am using smartphone without using webplan in "tmobile" .I only use with wifi. But there is no way we can run ,at and t knows easily which phone by sim.But i think there is a way to work with wifi with removing simcard..but you may still need to subscribe for 3g which is worthless. BUt,;) there is a hack way to remove data plan .. first dial voice mail then disconnect voicemail and after than call 611! and hit 0 until you connect to represantative(keep on pressing 0) and tell them that u dont have iphone and say to cancel data plan ;) Then after that is done > GO to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/hotmail.mobileconfig from your safari browser of iphone(not pc) then insert following infos APN: Invalid.asdjblank Username: Blank Password: blank then select custom and after that it tells you what to put there. then copy it direcltly -"work to word" then press install then it says "verified" and you are done and after that -you will get error !no data plan for cell phone thanks..this is 100% not wrong it you dont understand what i am saying say i dont understand i will try to define in details.i made my two brothers iphone worl lik this.
