Received email from "[NepalWatch] !Find A New Capital For New Nepal!" "Moderator" !Find A New Capital For New Nepal! To The Cabinet Members, parliamentarians, political parties, professionals, Businessmen, Students, Ladies and Gentlemen! As we know, Nepal is under massive restructurings process. Therefore, majorities of Nepalese feel that Interim Parliament and Interim Government should decide now to shift the traditional Capital of Nepal "Kathmandu" somewhere in New City due to the following reasons. 1. As per International philosophy of capital shifting( India, Europe, Africa etc) 2. To initiate the balance development culture in overall nation 3. To minimize future Royal influence in state affairs 4. To increase and decentralize the business, development, tourism, education, employment and internationalize the nation in rational basis 5. To make national mainstreaming of all marginalize group, ethnic, cats, religions, languages etc 6. To prevent from hazardous crisis( water, earthquake, roads, accidents, resources) 7. To minimize the social internal discrimination 8. To make economy and effective Governance system 9. To Implement the concept of Nation Building into Practice 10. To build inclusive national structure etc 11. T have anew test of New Capital 12. To develop to connect through effective and advance infrastructural network 13. To increase optimum public access in national affairs and resources I think there is no logic at all that we should keep permanently our capital in Kathmandu. In my opinion our government and parliament can decide now that in 2010 our capital will shift in …..Cities. Afterwards the concerned people and authority will prepare to shift or extend their access in given period in New Capital. I think 3 years is more than enough for Preparation to shift a capital city in country like Nepal. Please contribute your worthy opinion and views. Thank. Best regards' K.H. Pushkar Now: Germany

I vote for Pokhara. Here's why: 1. It is at the center of Nepal. 2. Easily accessible via road and air. 3. It is beautiful. 4. No water shortage. 5. Still somewhat empty, compared to Kathmandu. Hence, good potential for proper urban planning. I am sure there are more reasons.

Surkhet should be added to the list too! :P Might make it more palatable to all - its a valley, not too hilly, not too flat, represents the ethnic and geographic diversity of Nepal etc etc But seriously, we don't have the money to move the capital. There are too many other more pressing things for the country to focus on. We are talking about a lot of money here. I am not sure if anyone has done a realistic estimate of the costs but I suspect it is in the order of billions if not trillions of rupees. That's money we can spend on infrastructure, health, education throughout the country and not lock it up just for the new capital city.

i don't really care where the capital should be at the moment, but all I know is along the borders of India there should be big cities and lots of armies on patrol, so that india will have less land capturing incidents, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?,

Ya the idea of shifting the capital is very logical and it is necessary as well. Though I am not an expert in urban planning, but for some suggestions of selecting the capital from below: 1. Hetuda [covering wider land of Amlejgung] 2. Butwal 3. chitwan [But I am not sure if it is already too crowded to be changed] But before any one of the location is officially declared as capital, lots of town planning has to be done to make sure it will not be 2nd Kathmandu which is too messy. Some people voted for Pokhara. I think Pokhara has its own importance of tourism spot and it may lose its original identity. Pokhara already have chance of economic reform. Apart from this even geographically it is quite closed in shape as Kathmandu. Some points when selecting the capital spot can be: 1. Plain Area, so cost of developing in fracture is low and is geographically safe. [reference to Bangkok] 2. Not too dense already, because it will be tough to modify/destroy older ones and build a new in fracture. If it is less populated now, it can be built with proper planning from the beginning. I am sure many experts here may add more ideas on this.

As far as I know, changing the capital has been one of the Maoists' agendas. But looks like they have given up the idea after realizing the ground reality of Nepal. Recently, I had an opportunity to talk to two senior leaders cum MPs of NC and UML. I asked this question to both of these leaders. And, both of these saw no imminent chances of changing the capital. Whether we need to change the capital or not is another question. But, the reality is that this isnt going to happen anytime soon.
