No !! As far as I know, initially they were called as Basnyat. But later on because of easiness to pronounce they strated to call Basnet.

In Jumli Malla kingdom, Basnyat were authorized to settle new villages towards eastern part. If you see their population settlement you will not find them significantly in far western region. They migrated from west to east.

There is a famous saying about them,
NEPAL BASNYAT KO TALWAR RA PANDE KO DHAAL LE BANEKO HO !!!!

Thanks Danphe and NALAPANI
I was curious as I have found 'Basnet' of ktm valley write 'Basnyat' whereas 'basnet' out of valley write 'basnet'. That could be purely chance incidents though.

Totally wrong guys, Basnyat and Basnet totally different. Basnyat and Basnet can get married. There are two kinds, Sripalis are Basnyat and Khaptadis are Basnet.
Hope this clear some of the confusion

@ Happy2009
You are totally wrong here. They are same but they can get married if their GOTRA is different. Even Thapa-thapa, karki-karki can get married. Do you have any clue if there is any difference between poudel and poudyal ?? Timsina and timilsina???

Kalopani is right.  Many people in ktm like to write Basnyat to show historical connection.

One of my fupu is married with a Basnyat of Ashan. Not only basnyat but Khatris, kunwar are also there in Ashan.  They are not Newars but pure Chhetri.

Kalopani,
I dont have any specific objective in knowing this info. I was just curious as something reminded me of historical events involving person of this surname. Hindu dharma is too complex i guess. It wont allow a marriage between people of same Gotra, but i just knew that basnet-basnyat (if they are different) , thapa-thapa, karki-karki or poudel-poudyal are allowed to get married. I think, people have defined these hindu-marriage-codes according to their convenience. I find these thing interesting, just dont have time to search and read these caste/ethnic related history of Nepal.

Basnyat and Basnet are different gotra and the Basnyat from Asan are santan of Abhiman Singh Basnyat. They are real Chetri Basnyat. Basnet are Khaptadi and they are from the place "Khaptad". They are also chettri. But NOT Newar.....

Actually all the surnames of chhetris(khas) are derived from posts they possessed during Jumli Malla (means Strong for duel ) kingdom.
Basnyat--- settler of new annexed/ explored places
bista --- tax collector
Karki - external affairs officers
Thapa -- Internal affairs officer (defense and buruecracy)
Khadka --- Planner for attacking other states
Mahat --- Chief of Army
Kathayat (Kadayat) --- transporter
Katwal -- Information/ Messenger

Originally, all the Chhetris hail from Karnali region (Baise rajyas). Later they migrated to different areas and worked as state army. The chief of army of Bara (Simraungadh) was Swaroop Singh Karki, who went to Kathmandu with a huge army to support Jaya Prakash Mall, but on the way to Kathmandu he decided to back Gorkhali King P N Shah. He was the leader during Gorkhali unification for the western forts like Tanahu, Argha, Khanchi, etc. Even the Kirtipure army was comprised of Khas, Magars and Yadavs of Terai while army of Kathmandu malla kings were Nagarkoti.

Basnet and Basnyat are same. some of them migrated to Gorkha (Sirupali Basnyat: Shivaram singh, Kehar singh, Abhiman singh, Dhaukal singh, Nahar Singh etc who lived in Asan after annexation of ktm) and some settled in Khaptad (Doti and some other districts) region and called as Khaptadi basnyat (EX CoAS Singha Bahadur Basnyat). Most of the chhetris are known by the place they hail from. eg. Kalikote khadaka, Kalikote Mahat, Palpali Khadka etc.

So, Happy 2009 be clear on this.

Nalapani, Kalopani, Happy2009 You guys are all right to some extent ...

Basnet and Basnyat are of different gotra.. (Originally)..  Basnyat are Sirupali and Basnet are Khaptadi.. Basnet origins in Khaptad where as Basnyat main roots goes all the way to Rajisthaan, and migrated with the shahs to Gorkha..

Modern days for ease ppl started writing Basnet instead of Basnyat..

The place you are talking about in Asan is called Tilanga.. It has been said that after Prithvi Narayn Shah won over KTM, and he decided KTM to be the new capital of Nepal. He placed his main ppl around different sector of KTM .. Basnyat got the Tilangaa house in Asan..

The palace we now know as Narayanhiti was built by Basnyat as well.. This was the house of Kaji Dhaulak Singh Basnyat..  Most of the Basnet / Basnyat that you see from Mahankal thaan all the way to Tilangaa house in Asan are Sirupali Basnyat..

Hope this helps...

Sna - Basnet / Basnyat are not newars..

 alright,,,here is the fact...

there is no difference between basnet and basnyat. some people write basnet and other basnyat just for no reason. I have seen people writing both of these two in a single family, it is there interest. abhiman singh basnyaat, a great knight in history used to be basnyat, so some basnets still try to follow him and write basnyat as their last name.

there are basically 4 types of basnet:

1. sirupali
2. khawatari
3. lamichhane (very rare, but the cast lamichhane are not basnet, they are totally different so do not get confused)
4. ...(i can not remember the fouth kind right now)

so guys, there is no difference between those two. its just interest of some people to show them as a great follower of their ancestor abhiman singh basnyat.

Let me summarize:
These two are totally different. Not related at all, its just a coincidnet  or it is derived from their job in historical kingdoms to have this common 'thar'. Thats the reason they are assigned different 'gotras'. None of the two 'thars' that were related at least in recent past are assigned different 'gotras'.
So, based on their origin: 1: sirupali--originally from rajasthan---basnyat, 2: khaptad---western part of nepal (or north west of india)--basnet, 3: lamichhane (origin could be somewhere)--basnet, 4: khulal---basnet. So, its just a coincident for all of these 4 chhertri groups to have a thar called 'basnet'.

Root of all the chhetris in nepal apart from few like Rathore, tandon  etc is Karnali region. If somebody says Sirupali Basnets came  from Rajsthan then it's just their self-appeasement to be superior to other chhetris (because after getting higher posts in society and army chhetris hated to be called as of khas origin). And, Shahs first emerged as king in Bhrikot near Syangja then migrated to Lamjung and Nuwakot but not gorkha. It is evident by the fact shahs have one of prime kul devi in Syangja, AALAM DEVI. According to Dor Bahadur Bista, Shahs were the inhabitant of Gandak region, may be hybrid of Magars and Khas. It is evident by the fact all the temples erected by Shahs have magars as priest.  But, to be superior they connected their lineage to the rajasthani rajpoot of ujjain/ chittaur. This is not a fact. So is in the case of Basnyat, Ranas and other Chhetris. All of them are khas, a nomadic group that entered Karnali region in distant past  from persia and adopted Hinduism only after 14th century (They practiced Masta pooja, shamanism, and buddhism: you can find wealth of evidence on this in Dullu and Sinja area of Dailekh and Jumla ). If Basnyat are rajasthani rajpoot why they worship Khapar and other MASTAS, local deity of khas people of Karnali. These Mastas have nothing to do with Hinduism and rajpootana. Since Manusmrite calls khas as rustic and uncivilized hilly people, after adopting hinduism during the rule of Jumli king Baliraj Shahi khas people who attained major posts in government and army started feeling embarrased to be known as khas. They started calling themselves descendants of rajsthani rajpoot.

Rana-Kunwar who call themselvs as descendant of mewad rajpoot is not a truth. They were Khadka of Jumla who migrated to Kaski to join army and because of their valor kaskeli king honored them with the surname Kunwar (to equate indian kunwar rajpoot).
It's not only in the case of Khas, but also in magars. You can see rajpootana surname such as Chauhan, Sen, etc both in chhetris and magars. Do you believe chauhan magars came from madhyapradesh or rajsthan???
