It was the end of 2012 and everyone around me was psyched to make new resolutions, I am going to start exercising from 1st Jan, OMG I am going on a diet, hey dude! Guess what I am going to quit smoking… uff how I get tired listening to all this. One thing I have realized in life is that I get bored with resolutions. It’s never going to work I know and most of us have realized it in the passage of time.

During the same time, someone tweeted (oh yea! twitter always helps you to be updated with what is happening around  the world) a link where a research showed that it is better to bath than to shower. The average shower uses 7 gallons of water per minute. The average shower time being 7 minutes that equals to 49 gallon where as the average size of the tub holds 40-60 gallon when filled to the top but mostly uses 30 only and maybe 5 gallon more to rinse off….so totaling of 35 gallon.

I was impressed. Wah! This is something that I can actually commit to myself or maybe make a resolution to save some water. Do a great deed by saving some water for other people to use it. SO when 2013 started, I started using buckets and mugs to wash myself. It was indeed very difficult if you are so used to the lavish showering style. For few days, I felt so dirty and my mind was telling me that the shampoo is not properly rinsed off. I did convince myself that under circumstances where I am travelling or staying at someone else’s place, I am not going to make a big fuss if I am not going to get my bucket and mug.

Time passed and with days gone, I felt that yes I have saved some good amount of water. I even read in Ripley’s believe it or not that Kailash Singh, a man from India who had not taken a wash for 37 years in a greed of having a son, has 7 daughters. No I can’t do that. It is out of question to stay without taking a wash. After I read this, it was consoling that I am atleast taking a bath.

I finished 2013 without a shower. Plus minus the time I had unavoidable circumstances. I felt good. I realized I can stick to my commitments. I just needed a little bit of good cause to do that. How many gallons I have saved? I have not counted. But even if I have saved 100 gallons of water, I am proud about it.

The funny part is today I read another article (since the beginning of 2014 I am pretty flexible now with shower and bath). It argues that the debate between the shower and the bath has not ever come to any conclusion. Low-flow shower faucets, saves more water than the tub, unless you are taking a 20 minute long shower. Both have similar uses of water. For once I felt angry. Damn I had tortured myself to go through all that. But back in my mind I feel I have atleast tried to do something good for the environment.

Good Job, that's how I wash my dishes, brush my teeth etc.
I've seen morons letting water flow all time while brushing their teeth, or washing dishes or when taking shower. Even when taking shower, I just soak myself off, then shower down, shampooing, and turn back the water on, rinse and am done. I'm sure I'm not wasting more than 10 litre of water per shower. In summer, it's like 'bhangera style', may be just 2-3 litre and don't take more than 5 minutes.

Have you ever thought of taking shower once with bath tub drainage closed, so you can to see how much water you use in each shower? That is scientific way of determining how much water you use to shower vs. taking bath.
Well you can do it now! It’s not too late,, do not always go by what other tell you or you read .
If you believe in everything you read. In that case I am king of LA…Trust me ..But I won’t tell u if its Los angles or Louisiana or Little angels.

Ambrosia, it's not the worst but actually a good thing to save water. When I wrote I shower like 'bhangera style' meaning saving water, I meant it but if you gaze your surrounding, you'll see they need to stop what they're doing. With every pee they flush, every brush they let the water run, and every shower they bath like they're in a pond. I actually dislike people like these who don't have regards to natural resources. These morons must be left without water for days on Sahara desert only then they can understand preciousness of water. Saving water certainly helps in the long run.

Lessons Learned From A Year Without Shower

As of today it has been one year since my last shower.  Yes, I know that sounds crazy and a year ago I would have agreed with you.  I was a regular showering guy for the first 26 years of my life. Well, maybe not every single day, but just about.

So how does a regular showering guy end up going 365 days and counting without taking a shower?  It started with a long bike ride across America to promote sustainability and eco-friendly living.  I set a bunch of rules for myself to follow to lead by example. The rule for water was that I could only harvest it from natural sources such as lakes, rivers, and rain or from wasted sources such as leaky faucets.  And I kept track of exactly how much I used too, with an aim of showing just how little we need to get by.

I made it through the 100-day bike ride without taking a shower and for me that was quite the task in itself.  But everything had gone so well that I decided to continue my showerless streak.  I set a goal for 6 months and when that day passed I figured I might as well go a full year without a shower.

So here I am now, one year later, to tell you story of my year without a shower.

I might as well bring this up right away.  You think I’m really stinky right?  You think I smell like some sort of Swamp Monster like this:

1b-1024x682

Actually, nope.  When I say that I haven’t showered that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t bathing. I swam almost daily in places like this:

3-1024x678

And showered in waterfalls like this:

4--1024x682

and I used eco-friendly biodegradable soap when I needed to.

5-1024x682

But I learned that by living naturally I didn’t need cosmetic products anymore.  I just used some soap, toothpaste, and essential oils and found that to work real well.  This compared to previously using colognes, deodorant, shampoo, lotions, and all sorts of other products full of chemicals.   And guess what?  I had no lack of friends!

6-1024x681

In fact some even bathed with me.

7-1024x682

And I even had some romances in that year.

7-redone-1024x682

Nobody thought that I smelled at all.  And I surprised myself at how clean I was, just like everyone else.

9-1024x682

I realized that water doesn’t have to come from a shower head to get me clean. You can wash yourself in lakes.

10-1024x682

Rivers.

11-1024x682

Or just by sitting in the rain.

12-1024x682

But when natural water wasn’t available I found other places to clean myself without having an impact.  Like this leaky fire hydrant in Brooklyn:

13-1024x682

Or this blasting fire hydrant in the Bronx:

14-1024x682

I learned that I can air dry rather than using a towel.  And this meant less laundry, which saved even more water.

15-1024x682

And I also turned my shower time into a time to connect with nature.  It became my favorite time of the day, when I would disconnect from the stresses of life and be present with my surroundings.

connect-with-surroundings--1024x682

Sometimes I jumped around before jumping in.

171-1024x682

And sometimes I just chilled out.

18-1024x682

Other times I contemplated life.

19-1024x682

And on occasion I’d have guests.

20-1024x682

I learned that the average American uses about 100 gallons of water per day.  But I was able to use less than 2 gallons per day on my bike trip.  That’s just 8 Nalgene water bottles.  (This was not including the natural water and leaky sources that I bathed in.)

21-1024x682

Most importantly I learned to really appreciate every last drop.

22-1024x682

Because water gives life to all of us and the animals too.

23-1024x682

When I got home from my bike trip I resumed  life at home but managed to use just 10-20 gallons per day.  That is 5-10 times less than the average American uses.  I went another 8 months without showering and conserved over 5,000 gallons of water and had plenty of fun with friends at the same time!

24-1024x682

And when I didn’t feel like swimming, but I needed to get clean, I just rubbed myself down with a cloth and a gallon of water.  But most importantly, I learned that you don’t have to stop showering to be a part of the solution.  Their are many easy ways to conserve water and most are really easy for any of us to do.

You can…

-Flush the toilet less often.

-Take shorter showers or turn off the water while you’re soaping up and scrubbing down.

-Wash clothes less and in full loads

-Turn off the faucet

-Wash the dishes efficiently.

-Install water efficient showerheads and toilets.

-Get your leaks fixed.

-Grow food not lawns.

-Harvest rain.

How will you choose to conserve water?  Start today by picking just one way to conserve and with time do more and more.  You’ll likely find it to be quite easy this way.

And if you do all of that, you might start feeling like this!

After bath, I feel showering head to toe. That means 50% more use of water.
