Copying style is understandable. Putting one's face on existing photo, which is somebody else's work, is stealing.

In all relevance, I don't think we will start putting out original ideas until our society is more receptive of art in general.
We don't encourage artists, we simply don't give a sh!t about them, so no demand for their products, creativity, and hence no supply from their side.
On the other hand, blatant copying exists because there is a market for consumption of those goods.

I personally think this starts at school. Although we're encouraged not to cheat in exams, we merely write everything the teacher writes in the backboard. It is instilled into us that there is only one right answer ( and most often it is the answer dictated by the teacher in the classroom). Even in Maths, most teachers advocate solving a problem in only one way. Critical thinking and rules of logic are considered upstarts. Pupils who question often in classrooms are considered to be disruptive and even subject to discipline. I sincerely hope the younger generation has moved on with this hackneyed education. Amen!

Snurp, agreed. I have friends who feel there is only ONE TRUE WAY to do something and that way is usually taught to them early on, or someone tells them about it. If there's ONE TRUE WAY, its that you must discover it yourself.
Hopefully things will change.

I'm not sure if teaching style has anything to do with it. Clearly it is lack of copyright laws that promote copying.

rethink you talk like we follow all the (existing) laws in Nepal :). What I meant was our teaching makes it okay to plagiarize in the first place (dictation). Anything that is deeprooted in childhood is pretty hard to let go. Even other plagiarizers of newspapers , that we've recently heard of, don't think it is a problem of cutting/pasting or writing verbatim from other sources without giving credit to them.

You can't blame it on our teaching. Everywhere teaching is similar. You have certain facts that need to be taught. Even in US people have to memorize many things.
The copying does not exist in developed countries solely because of stern copyright laws. Even though there is copyright laws people try to copy things once in a while but they are taken to court and even fined. Absense of that legal responsibility makes people copy everything under the sun in Nepal.
