If one gets a 5 -year B2 tourist visa to the US (to attend son's graduation) but does not go to the US at the time, can he/she travel to the US at a later date without any problem? I've heard people say that one must visit the U.S within 6 months of issuance of B2 visa, but I couldn't find anything similar mentioned in an official source. I know that the visa holder must prove a valid reason for entering the US at the port of entry but my main concern here is whether the B2 visa holder can enter the US even though he/she did not do so within 6 months of visa issuance.

My uncle came after 3 years after getting visa. But, there should be a valid reason. That's all. He can come within that 5 years of time. Hope it helps!

thanks hadijatra! what do you think are some valid reasons for entry? Would my parents be able to enter the US to visit me by showing my bank statement, pay stubs, proof of employment in the US and an invitation letter written by me?

Once your parents get visa, those proof does not matter at all. The only clearance level for them will be the port of entry or checkpoint of US. If they provide valid reason such as they want to meet you but there was some personal reason so that they could not visit will be enough. If they got visa already, they will be fine saying that they missed you a lot and want to see how you are. Hope it helps!

As far as I know, the visa is multiple entry for 5 years that is valid only if u enter US 1st for the applied reason. For this case, your parents must enter US for your graduation (before the graduation date). They can stay for 6 months and then MUST go back. Then they can enter whenever they want for 5 years but each stay should be 6 months. If there is violation to any of these, the visa will be canceled.

Sajhababa, my mom came to visit me after 4 years after getting her tourist visa. She couldn't make it because of my dad's illness before that. She later came in without any problem. As a matter of fact, she doesn't even speak english. You should not be worried.

Sajhababa, FYI, my mom was supposed to come here for my graduation too and she couldn't make it. I don't think Lilamaya is giving you a correct information----"your parents must enter US for your graduation (before the graduation date)". That is not true. Hope it gives you some relief.

American multiple visa is like tylenol extra strength, you can use it until it expires for any reason. Drug : american tourist visa apperance: sticker like sticked to a page in a non american passport. usage: permit to get to port to entry for US. Dosage: once every 6 months until the expiration date .(for the expiration date see the visa) reason. Mostly used for son/daugther's graduation or new family addition. tourism and many others. pls consult ur lawyer if this visa is right for you. Basically....the visa can be used for the validity of the visa for a valid reason
