All,

I know not many people come to US for further education right after SLC in Nepal..but those that would like to, what options are available in the US? Are there colleges/high schools in the US that accept international students who are wishing to enroll in Grade 11 here? Are community colleges of any help in this? And how difficult is it to obtain an
F-1 visa in such a case?

You enroll in a community college right after SLC. That's what i did.It will have to be on F-1 visa.

yeah they do accept you as a high school student (8-12). i don't think public schools are better than good schools back in nepal/india though and private schools are bit expensive for new immigrants.

a note of caution: i don't have kids yet and i didn't go to high school in US so correct me if i am wrong here

kaynish1,

So they accepted you in a community college here in the US with a SLC education? Would you mind mentioning which community college you joined? I thought one needs to have completed upto grade 12 in Nepal to be able to join a community college (just like a undergraduate course). I believe most students in Nepal are only 16 years old when they complete their SLC. Were there any special requirements or standardized tests you needed to take before enrolling? Did your F-1 visa application raise any eyes at the embassy?

Loote
It depends where you're. Many public schools are really good, and it's not always rich kids who go there. I've seen kids of illegial immigrant going straight into Ivy league, not they were rich. It's just the right place, right school.

Kirsten, I know of 2 cases where Nepali students have been admitted straight into US universities with only an ICSE (Indian equivalent as an SLC) and their TOEFL scores. These fellas eliminated going through 11th and 12th grade completely saving 2 years. BTW, these cats got here some 5-7 years ago, so I don't know if the Embassy folks have caught onto this as yet.

bob,
what you said applies for colleges. am not sure about high schools though, meaning, i can't say more public high schools are better than private in US, at least from what i heard. but then again, i could be wrong here.

i did my SLC from St. Xavier's in 1984. I got my F1 to enroll in a community college in California. I started in 85 fall term. All I needed was my SLC certificate and Toefl score. But that was in 1985, things might have changed by now.

Kirsten,

If you are already present here in the US, high schools accept you without checking your status. i mean you can get enrolled even if you're in a B1/B2 visa or are illegal. They used to have a formal way of enrolling foreign students in high school, just like the I-20 for foreign college students. But they stopped doing that a long time ago. I also tried to come here and join high school right after SLC but there was no way of doing so. However, if you are here on a different visa like a B1/B2, dependent, or any other visa, you can get enrolled in high school. But there is no special visa designed for international students who want to come here and join the high school.

Some of my friends who came here with DV and only with SLC education from Nepal directly joined college because in the school transcript it is written High School Result or some thing like this. High school in Nepal is till class 10, however, here, as you know, is till class 12. But with the "high School result" in the transcript, some colleges, although not all, mistankely take that as high school here (class 12 education) and aceept those students. In fact, those students, including my friend, get/got lucky.

You can join college or +2 for two years and then apply. you'll have a lot of oppurtunities. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

-HF

i think u can directly go to community college...cuz in slc certificate...it just says that u've passed high school and it doesn't mantion about the grades like 10,11 or 12...so they might take slc certificate as High School Diploma...one of my cousin did the same...he got accepted in community college in CA.And if you can directly go to community college..don't waste your 2 years enrolling in 11th and 12th grade in US. that is my opinion.
