I ran into this problem and I'm hoping that I'm not the only one to face it. I used my Check Card from an American bank to withdraw money from an ATM machine in Nepal. It would not let me withdraw saying that I have an insufficient fund in my account. The $100 that I had in my account would not be converted into an equivalent in Nepali rupees, but would be shown as Rs 100. I am sure there are ways to work around it. Does anyone know?

Have you tried Standard Chartered /Grindlays bank in Kantipath? If your ATM card is a Mastercard or Visa, they used to give you a cash advance against it. Not sure if they still do but it might be worth a shot. Once caveat, some US banks charge an international ATM fee per cash transaction - mine was $5 when I was in KTM a few years ago.

Good luck.

I was recently in Kathmandu. I used Himalayan Bank in Thamel to withdraw money from my ATM card several times without any problem. The balance in my account was shown in NPR. Maybe you can give it a shot at HB in Thamel, see if it works.
