अमेरीका बस्ने नेपालीको वास्तविक कथा, ‘पैसा छैन, धाक मात्रै’

अमेरीका हेर्दा ठुलो छ र धनी पनि । तर यहाँ रहेका नेपाली सामान्य र गरीव छन् । अमेरीकामा बस्ने नेपालीको वास्तविकताबारे आज हामी प्रष्ट्याउने कोशिश गरेका छौं । यहाँ बस्ने अधिकांश नेपालीहरुले गर्ने काम ग्यास स्टेशन, अस्पताल, होटेल, रेष्टुरेन्ट, व्युटीपार्लर, सरसफाई, ट्याक्सि डाइभिड लगायतका सामान्य स्तरका कामहरु नै हुन् । आफुलाई नेता, समाजसेवी, पत्रकार, व्यवसायी सवैले गर्ने यी कामहरुमा थौरै व्यवसायी वनेका होलान तर धेरैको हालत हातमुख जोर्ने काममै सिमित छ । यसैवाट कसैले नेपालको दुर्गम गाउमा केहि हजार र वल गरेर लाखको खर्च गरेर चर्चा कमाइरहेका छन् । कोही राजनीतिक पार्टीको नेता वनेर आफैले आफुलाई प्रचार गरिरहेका हुन्छन् । त्यसैगरि कोही व्यवसायी भन्दै एनआरएनको धाक लगाईरहेका हुन्छन जो सँग आफ्नै परिवार र आफ्नै गाउमा सामान्य काम गर्नलाई पैसा पुगिरहेको हुदैन । यता पत्रकार भन्नेहरु पनि के कम सामान्ने मान्छेलाई पनि ठूलो मान्छे वनाएर वाँच्नलाईृ गाह्रो वनाईरहेका हुन्छन् । यस्तै यस्तै चर्चा र भ्रम सृर्जना गर्दै वितिरहेको छ अमेरिकामा नेपालीहरुको जिवन । 

यहाँ गरीव छन् अधिकाँस नेपालीहरु 
नेपालबाट धेरैजसोले सोच्छन् अमेरिकामा नेपालीहरु धनि छन् । अमेरिकामा रुखमा पैसा फल्छ, जहा पुगेका नेपालीहरु रुखै चढेर डलर टिप्छन् । प्रिन्सटन, हावर्ड जस्ता संसारकै उत्कृष्ट विश्वविद्यालयमा पढछन् । यहाँको सीप नेपालमा भित्रयाउने सुनौलो अवसर हुन्छ । विश्कै उच्च प्रविधिको पहुचमा छन् । हरेक हिसावले उनीहरुको स्तर नेपालको भन्दा धेरै माथी छ । तर यी सवै अडकल भ्रम मात्रै हुन् । हुनेहरुले आफ्नै र नहुनेले सडकमा पार्किड गरेका गाडी र घरमा टासिएर खिचिएका तस्विर, अग्ला गगनचुम्वि घर अगाडी र समुद्रको छेउमा गएर खिचिएका तस्विरले अमेरिकामा वस्ने नेपाली जिवनलाई अहिलेसम्म यथार्थबाट टाढा वनाईरहेको छ । व्यवसायिक रुपमा पर्यटकको भुमिकादेखि पढाईको लागि यतै भाषिनेहरु कलेज छोडेर सडकमै काम गर्न उत्रिएका हुन्छन् ।

भ्रममा छन् धेरै मानिसहरु 
पछिल्लो पटक छिटफुट रुपमा मिडियाले अमेरिकामा नेपाली जिवनको यथार्थवारे प्रष्ट्याउने कोसिस गरेपनि यो प्रयास हात्तिको मुखमा जिरा भएको छ । त्यसो त नेपालमा वस्ने धेरैलाई त अमेरिकामा वस्ने नेपालीहरुको कठिन दैनिकी सुनाउदा पत्यार लाग्दैन । नेपालमा वस्नेलाई के थाहा ती अग्लाघरहरुको अगाडी र समुद्रको विचमा गएर फोटो छिच्न घन्टौको वस र रेल यात्रा गर्नुपर्छ । उनीहरुलाई के था धेरै जसोका फोटोमा देखिएका गाडी र घर तीनिहरुका होइनन् । भएर पनि के भो ती सम्पत्ति हुदा र नहुदाको अमेरिकी जिवनमा खासै भिन्नता देखिदैन । नभएकालाई वरु कमाई जोगाउने वातावरण होला हुनेलाई वढि घण्टा हान्नुपर्ने मात्रै हात लागेको हुन्छ अपवाद वाहेक । यहाँ अधिकांश नेपालीहरुले गर्ने काम ग्यास स्टेशन, अस्पताल, होटेल, रेष्टुरेन्ट, व्युटीपार्लर, ट्याक्सि डाइभिड लगायतका सामान्य स्तरका कामहरु नै हुन् । आफुलाई नेता, समाजसेवी, पत्रकार, व्यवसायी सवैले गर्ने यी कामहरुमा थौरै व्यवसायी वनेका होलान तर धेरैको हालत हातमुख जोर्ने काममै सिमित छ । यसैवाट कसैले नेपालको दुर्गम गाउमा केहि हजार र वल गरेर लाखको खर्च गरेर चर्चा कमाइरहेका छन् । कोही राजनीतिक पार्टीको नेता वनेर आफैले आफुलाई प्रचार गरिरहेका हुन्छन् । त्यसैगरि कोही व्यवसायी भन्दै एनआरएनको धाक लगाईरहेका हुन्छन जो सँग आफ्नै परिवार र आफ्नै गाउमा सामान्य काम गर्नलाई पैसा पुगिरहेको हुदैन । यता पत्रकार भन्नेहरु पनि के कम सामान्ने मान्छेलाई पनि ठूलो मान्छे वनाएर वाँच्नलाईृ गाह्रो वनाईरहेका हुन्छन् । यस्तै यस्तै चर्चा र भ्रम सृर्जना गर्दै वितिरहेको छ अमेरिकामा नेपालीहरुको जिवन । एकातिर आर्थिक अवस्था सुधार्न नसकेका नेपालीहरु अर्कोतिर नेपाल छँदाको सोचाई लिएर भ्रम सृजना गरिरहेका हुन्छन् । राजनीतिक आस्थाको रुपमा संघ संगगठन वनाएर नेपालकै राजनीतिक भित्र्याउने मात्र होइन गैरराजनीतिक भन्नेहरुले पनि कला सास्कृति, भेष भुषा, समाजसेवा, राष्टियता र देशप्रेमको नाममा अवैध कार्यहरु गर्दै नेपाली नेपालीबीच लडाई झगडा र मुद्धामामिला गरेर देशकै वेइज्जत गरिरहेका वेलावेलामा सवैले सुनेकै हुनुपर्छ । देशको इज्जत जोगाउने कसैका प्रयासहरु पनि अर्थहिन वनाईदिन नेपाली स्वयं पछि नपरेका प्रसस्तै घटनाहरु छन् । प्रवासमा त्यो पनि अमेरिकामा आएर जात जातीका एक भन्दा वहु संस्था त्यसभित्र पनि वहु नाम राखेर संस्था खोलिने प्रवृतिले नेपालको कसरी गौरव वढाउछ र रु राजनीतिको नाममा अन्तराष्टिय स्तरमा पहुँच राख्न नसकेर नेपालकै भातृ तथा व्रान्च संस्था खोलेर त्यसमा पनि झगडा गर्दै हिडेपछि हाम्रो राजनीतिक स्तर कसरी माथी उठ्छ रु त्यसो त नेपालको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्ने राजदुतावास देखि नियोगसम्मले खासै लछारपाटो लाएको देखिदैन् । तलव भत्ता सुविधा लिने वाहेक उनीहरुले केहि गरेको भए यहाँ वस्ने तीन लाख नेपालीहरुको डाटा ६० हजारमा कसरी सिमित हुथ्यो । सरकारका प्रतिनिधिहरु आएको वेला र यताको वसाईपछि एयरपोर्टमै पुगेर चाकडी गर्नेवाहेक उनीहरुको मेहेनत कतै देखिदैन । अन्तिमसमयमा आएका विरामी प्रधानमन्त्री निको भएर घर फर्कदापनि उनी सन्चो भए भन्ने सुखद सामाचार पनि नदिएर पठाइयो । प्रधानमन्त्रीको स्थास्थ्यको चासो लिएर यहाँका नेपालीहरुले व्यक्तिगत र संस्थागतरुपमा नभेटेका पनि होइनन् । देशको प्रधानमन्त्रीलाई व्यक्तिको पेवा जस्तो वनाएर उनकै परिवारले प्रस्तुत गरे । एकजना संचारकर्मी भन्दै थिए समाचारको लागि धेरै पटक सम्पर्क गर्दा पनि जवाफ आएन यो के तरिका हो रु हाम्रा सोचाई र व्यवहारको स्तर हेर्दा लाग्छ यो भन्दा नेपालमा स्तरिय व्यवहार हुन्छन् । शुरुमै यहाँ आउनेहरु जो सुकै लाई लाग्छ यहाका नेपालीहरु हरेक हिसावले स्तरिय होलान् तर होइन रहेछ । पछिल्लो चुनावमा नेपाली काग्रेसका नरहरि आचार्यले चुनाव जित्ने र हार्ने ईश्वर पोखरेलले अंगालो मारेका थिए । तर यहाँ एउटा झिनो मसिनो संस्थाको चुनावमा हार्ने र जित्नेको जुहारी हेर्दा लाग्छ यो कस्तो ताण्डव नृत्य हो । एनआरएन देखि एएनए मात्र होइन् विपरित विचारका राजनीतिक दलका भातृ संगठनहरु जसमा पनि एउटै संगठनभित्र र अरु कुनै नेपालीहरुको संस्थामा छैन कि त्यो ताण्डव नदेखिएको होस । यो स्तरले यहाँका नेपालीहरुको गुणस्तर विचार र सोचाईमा प्रश्नचिन्ह खडा गरेको छ । केहि वुद्धिजिवीको हकमा पनि स्तरको नाम निसानै छैन । उल्टै नेपालमा यस्तो भएन, नेताहरुले देश विगारे, खत्तम भयो भन्नेवाहेक उनीहरुको खासै टिप्पणी भेटिदैन । 
अमेरिकामा सिक्ने कुराहरु नभएका होइनन् । धेरै सुविधाहरुको वीचमा सिक्ने कुराहरु पनि प्रसस्तै छन् । उदाहरणको रुपमा भाषा र व्यवहारमा शिष्टता हुनुपर्छ । सडकमा थुक्नु हुदैन देखि लिएर कुनैपनि काममा हिनतावोध गर्नुहुदैन लगायत थुप्रै थुप्रै । नेपालीहरु भने नेपालीहरु वाध्यता र विवसका कारण यी कुराहरुमा संलग्न हुन्छन् । नत्र भने नेपालमा पुग्दा नपुग्दै एर्पोटदेखि शुरु हुन्छ जहापायो त्यहि थुक्ने र नाक खुम्च्याउने व्यवहारहरु । सामाजिक काममा सुक्को नझार्नेहरु थाहा पाउदा पाउदै निजी स्वार्थको लागि घुस दिएर काम गराउन पछि पर्दैनन् नेपालमा पुगेपछि । र सत्य कुरा कहिल्यै वोल्नु नपरोस भन्दै एकतर्फी तारिफ मात्रै सुनेर वसिरहन्छन् नेपालमा पुगेको वेला । नेपालमा वस्नेहरुमाथी सधै भ्रम सृजना गरिरहेका हुन्छन् ।

किन परिवर्तन भएनन् नेपालीहरु  
यस्तो अमेरिकाबाट घुमेर फर्किने मात्र होइन यतै लामो समय विताएर नेपालमा पुग्ने नेपालीहरुको व्यवहारमा खासै परिवर्तन आएको भेटिदैन । धनिदेशमा वसेर हुर्केने पछिल्लो पुस्ताका नेपालीहरुले कस्तो सोच र व्यवहार गर्ने हुन् त्यो भने वाँकी नै छ । तर अहिलेसम्म धनि देशमा वस्ने झण्डै शतप्रतिशत नेपालीहरु गरिव सोच र विचारले अगाडी वढिरहेको सजिलै देख्न सकिन्छ ।

While it's a little generalized and maybe short sighted in a few places including the demeaning title of the article, I don't think the article is totally inaccurate if you guys think about it.For example.
I own a house. But do I really? I pay the mortgage, the bank owns the house. Same with cars
I go to the beach but do I really own a condo near the beach? The opulence and fun shared in facebook photos is simply misleading. Everytime I go to Nepal I feel poor compared to people who stayed back and now work in Banks and own businesses. They spend money like crazy and visit different countries once every year.
Bottomline, I probably will never make it beyond the middle class in the US (unless I win a lottery). I will have a house after paying 30 years of my mortgage, a couple of nice cars all paid off. But that's about it, and the truth is that I will be working my ass off until the day I retire.
But besides that, I'm quite happy, because regardless of where you are, working hard is important. I don't know how I would have done back in Nepal, Maybe good.. maybe bad.. I don't know and I don't even think about it because my destiny was to pursue the American dream and that's what I'm after and will be till my last breath.

Good Point Fountaindew. I agree with your points but believe me with the credit you get for your house and car, I do not think u will be able to get it back home. The house price in kathmandu easily goes upto $200K nowadays. So, with the regular earnings, do u think someone would give u this much credit back home. This is only possible is US.
Even being a student you can buy a car here, do u think that is possible in Nepal?
Yes, for every economy type there are advantages and disadvantages. You cannot say bad by just taking about the disadvantages. Think this way, will you be able to go other than dirty places than GOA? Your friends may be going to other countries, but dude u are already in one continent called USA. You do not need to go other countries.

Do u think u can get a house worth half a million without cheating or taking bribes?
Do you think, even if take bribes, will your conscience will let u do that?
Remember, most of the people in Nepal would like to come to this country and settle. I am not talking about middle class, I have seen the upper class people doing so.

So it's all about money, huh. Fountaindew did raise some good points though. In the US, unless you own your own business, you will be working your as* off to make money for your boss. Some guys I know who own shops in Thamel make 3-5 lakh per month. That is two-third of what I make, but I would not mind changing places with them. At least they are with their parents and are not as stresed as some of us here are with our work.

To be honest, I have so many complaints about this article that I can go on and on for a whole day. Yes, I was also mad at the title of the article and especially the last statement. This is so demeaning and insult for all the Nepalese people who had been working so hard to live and be successful and move forward in their life. And I believe there are many Nepalese in US who even want to give back to Nepal wherever they are.
Perrybhadra is right. Whoever wrote this, has no data or number to support any of his statement. He does not know how many drivers or restaurant workers or businesspersons or scientist or architechts are there in US. He is just going on rant like an other angry person.
fountaindew and gonecrazy make good point about the life in US. But this is how things run in America and it's not illegal. I don't believe that I need to own a condo to go to the beach and take picture. There is nothing wrong on it unless he/she post that picture on fb with caption 'hey that's my beach'. And there is nothing wrong in taking picture in front of someone's Maserati. This is how things run in America.

Just wanna add few more points on this topic. I think the reason people dont have ton of saving in this country is simply because we enjoy life. we earn alot of money compared to Nepal and spend as much for ourselves, like vacation, good cars, latest gadgets etc. Thats the true meaning of life in my thinking. The meaning of enjoying life in nepal is totally different. People there thinks recreation is waste of money. The difference is in thinking.

I think this story applies to almost every where in the world not just USA ...no one hands you anything for free either here or anywhere ..you've to work hard ...harder than we work in Nepal ..coz living in developed countries is not easy like in Nepal where most people like this writer of this Nonsense article don;'t know what 's hardworking mean.
